Portugal started with an exiting match against Côte d’Ivorie, which though ending goalless was a showpiece to the skill and ability of both teams. But Portugal let fly in their second game when they came up against the group weaklings North Korea, whom they thrashed 7-0.Spain started this tournament favourites but that soon went out of the window when a poor performance saw them lose the opening match 1-0 to Switzerland thanks to a Gelson Fernandez goal early in the second half.
There were no such glitches in the second match when they strolled past the group’s weakest link Honduras 2-0 thanks to a brace from David Villa.
